Telephone scams are targeting utility customers around the nation. A caller claiming to be from the utility will call customers saying that a payment must be made with a prepaid debit card in order to prevent the service from being disconnected. Your caller ID may even indicate that the call is from Marshfield Utilities. Scammers can use computers and spoofing technology to make it look like the call would be coming from Marshfield Utilities. The caller will instruct the person to purchase a prepaid debit card and then provide them with the serial number on the card. By providing the serial number, the caller will have access to the funds on the card.
Marshfield Utilities would never call you and ask for a serial number on your prepaid card. We only accept debit or credit card payments on our website, MarshfieldUtilities.org. We do not take prepaid, credit, or debit card payments over the phone.
We have now heard from a Marshfield Utilities’ customer that received a call. The caller that contacted the Marshfield Utilities’ customer specifically said that payment needed to be made by a Green Dot Money Pak Refill, which can be purchased at Walgreens or the Dollar Store. The call was made on a Saturday, and the customer was told that if payment wasn’t made in 1 hour that their electric service would be disconnected. Marshfield Utilities would never disconnect a customer for non-payment on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, nor request payment with a prepaid card.
Some tips to remember:
- Mail your payment in the return envelope provided with your bill
- Use the drop box, located in the center of our parking lot, to make your payment. This is available 24 hours a day. Please do not put cash in the drop box.
- Be suspicious of a call, email, or text from someone who demands immediate payment.
- We won’t contact our customers using email or text messages.
- We won’t ask for payment via a prepaid card.
- If you give out the serial number on your prepaid card, that person has access to the funds on the card.
- Call Marshfield Utilities if you have questions on your account.
- Marshfield Utilities won’t call you on a weekend.
- If your account is subject to disconnection, there would be a disconnection notice on your bill.
- Ask the caller for your account number and verify it with the account number on your bill.
- Marshfield Utilities never disconnects customers on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
- If you get a suspicious call, please call Marshfield Utilities at +1 (715) 387-1195 and the Marshfield Police Department at +1 (715) 387-4394. You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by calling +1 877-FTC-HELP.
Water line insurance
Many of our customers have received information from companies that provides water line insurance. These companies are not representing Marshfield Utilities, nor did they get any information from us in order to mail you the information.
They are offering insurance to cover your water line in case of failure. We urge our customers to always do their research whenever receiving mail about these services and before signing any contract.
